Dog Day Afternoon on Broadway is a gritty, darkly humorous stage adaptation of the legendary 1975 true-crime film Dog Day Afternoon. Set in the sweltering heat of Brooklyn in 1972, the story follows two desperate Vietnam veterans whose attempt to rob a local bank spirals into a tense 14-hour hostage standoff and media circus.The production, written by Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Adly Guirgis and directed by Rupert Goold, features striking, localized elements:The Cast: Stars Emmy Award winners Jon Bernthal as the erratic mastermind Sonny and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as his reluctant, introverted partner-in-crime, Sal.The Setting & The Stakes: It takes place at a Chase Manhattan branch in Gravesend, Brooklyn on August 22, 1972 .

Based on a true 1972 story, Sidney Lumet's 1975 drama chronicles a unique bank robbery on a hot summer afternoon in New York City. Shortly before closing time, scheming loser Sonny (Al Pacino) and his slow-witted buddy, Sal (John Cazale), burst into a Brooklyn bank for what should be a run-of-the-mill robbery, but everything goes wrong, beginning with the fact that there is almost no money in the bank. The situation swiftly escalates, as Sonny and Sal take hostages; enough cops to police the tristate area surround the bank; a large Sonny-sympathetic crowd gathers to watch; the media arrive to complete the circus; and police captain Moretti (Charles Durning) tries to negotiate with Sonny while keeping the volatile spectacle under control. When Sonny's lover, Leon (Chris Sarandon), tries to talk Sonny out of the bank, we learn the robbery's motive ??

NY Knicks Meets Dog Day Afternoon on Broadway : A High-Voltage Trip Back to 1970s NYC


Taking an electrifying trip back to 1970s New York City has never felt as visceral or urgent as it does in this stage adaptation of Dog Day Afternoon. Brought to life by the brilliant Stephen Adly Guirgis—a perennial favorite of ours—this production successfully transforms the legendary, Oscar-winning bank heist film into a powerhouse theatrical experience.


From the moment the curtain rises, the play grabs you and refuses to let go. The plot, centered on a bank robbery that spirals into a chaotic, high-stakes standoff, keeps the audience on their toes for over two hours. The tension is palpable as the narrative shifts between the frantic bank robbers, the terrified bank staff, and the pressure-cooker environment created by the NYPD, the FBI, and lead detectives.


The performances are nothing short of stellar, featuring hard-hitting, emotionally resonant dialogue delivered with intensity by every member of the large and talented ensemble. The stage design is equally superb, providing a gritty, immersive backdrop that perfectly frames the complex cast of characters. If you are sitting in the orchestra section, keep your eyes peeled—there are a couple of surprises in store for the audience about 35 - 45 minutes into the show, so be ready!


What truly elevated the night was the atmosphere in the house. The audience was fully engaged, with the energy in the room reaching a fever pitch; it was a thrill to look around and see patrons shouting along with the performers. We were even seated just one row away from several movie stars, including Colin Farrell (he played in The Penguin, 12 Monkeys, The Batman, The Minority Report, Total Recall movies, just to name a few).


This experience feels particularly historic. The play is based on a true story that took place in New York City around the time the New York Knicks basketball team won their first championship. Now, over 51 years later in 2026, we are watching this production at the exact same time the Knicks are currently playing for their second championship. It is a breathtaking, full-circle moment in our lives to witness this play during such a significant period for our city.

City Hall is demanding more than his signature, the landlord wants him out, the liquor store is closed — and the Church won’t leave him alone. COVID-19 Safety Rules New York 

All Broadway Theatres Continue to Require Proof of Full Vaccination and Masks


Although New York City lifted its mask and vaccine mandates on March 7, 2022, the Broadway League is continuing its COVID-19 safety protocols for all  Broadway houses (  plus other live events  - shows  )  through at least  April 30 , 2022 .

Audience members ages 5 and older must show proof of full vaccination with an FDA or WHO authorized vaccine. Theatregoers ages 18 and up must also present a photo ID such as a driver's license or passport. Audiences ages 12 to 17 can use a school ID or birth certificate without a photo; children ages 5 to 11 do not need an ID but must be accompanied by an adult. Masks are also required for all audiences inside Broadway theatres, except while actively eating or drinking. These rules remain in effect until Saturday, April 30, 2022 but will be reevaluated based on COVID-19 numbers in the weeks leading up to the deadline.
